Swirls: Bringing your mistress to a Hong Kong wine auction; ‘90+ Cellars’; dentist offers beer and wine

SWIRL: There’s a good read on the red-hot fine wine market in Hong Kong from the BBC’s Chris Hogg, who notes that many auction bidders are now from the the mainland and are buying up a lot of the best vintages. “One of them appeared to have brought his mistress,” the story notes. “She was tiny and looked rather bored.” Charles Curtis, who was head of North American wine sales for Christie’s and now does the same for the auction house in Hong Kong, provides good perspective on where the market is headed.

SWIRL: As you know, I have never scored wines, preferring a narrative-approach to w90 hy I think a wine is worth drinking. But that’s  just me. The business, however, continues to be score- obsessed, and one incarnation I just read about on CNBC.com  takes the form of a new brand called “90+Cellars.” The company buys surplus wines from around the world, puts its own label on them and offers them at discounted prices. Not just any old wines, but wines that “must have a pedigree of 90 or higher ratings, best buy or gold medal accolades from a respected wine authority or publication,” according to the 90+Cellars Web site. The precise sources of the wine are not revealed.

SWIRL: And for those who dread a visit to the dentist, Dr. Clint Herzog, a practitioner in Fort Worth offers a novel way to make his patients more relaxed by offering them beer and wine in the waiting room,  giving new relevance to the expression, “feeling no pain.” Watch the KXAS video here.

  1. This is the first time that I've heard of a dentist offering wine. I hope I could find one of these doctors in Orange County dentist clinics.

  2. This is one way of alleviating nervousness and anxiety. However, the patient must make sure not to drink too much since anesthesia will not take effect to people who have too much alcohol in the body.

  3. I like this idea because I've always dreaded to go to the dentist. I wish the dentist Sydney clinic downtown would give wine and beer too before I have my tooth extraction.

  4. This is a marvelous idea because adults would not hesitate to go to dentists because of childhood trauma. My dentist Laurel
once told me that alcohol does helps one to become numb before dental procedures.

  5. It's kind of weird to offer wine before dental care procedures but it does pretty makes sense to me. In fact, I would like to take some sips of wine before I have my denture repair next week.

  6. This is so cool. I think we all get a little numb when we drink alcohol. But for dental purposes, I think this would be a great strategy for all dental clinics to help their patients calm before any dental procedures.

  7. My dentist in Huntersville NC also uses this strategy to keep me calm every time I visit him for my dental check up. It does helps one become numb thus making dental care procedures less painful.

  9. This is very interesting post. I've never heard that a dentist offers wine and beer. I'm a bit confuse though, if this is accepted by the dental world? Has drinking wine and beer is a safe alternative to anesthesia?

  10. I like the idea of having a few shots of alcohol before any dental procedure. I think my Buckhead dentist says before that dentists these days are becoming creative on how to help their patients calm and relax before oral care procedures.

  11. Dr. Clint Herzog's plan to keep his patients more relaxed with a bit of alchohol seems to go against what most dentists preach about oral health care. I know some dentists in houston that don't want people to indulge too much in wine. But then, any stain they get would only get cleaned up after.
